LCL vs FCL Shipping Explained: Which Is Right for Your Imports

When you ship by sea, you will be asked whether you want an LCL or FCL service. The right choice depends on how much cargo you have, and it can make a real difference to your shipping cost. Here is what each term means.

What Is FCL (Full Container Load)

With FCL, you book an entire container — usually a 20-foot or 40-foot unit — for your goods alone. It is the most efficient choice once you have enough cargo to fill most of a container.

  • Lower cost per unit when volume is high
  • Faster handling and less risk of damage, since the container is sealed at the factory
  • Best for large, regular or full-pallet orders

What Is LCL (Less than Container Load)

With LCL, your goods share a container with shipments from other importers. You only pay for the space your cargo occupies, which makes it ideal for smaller orders.

  • Pay only for the volume you use
  • Accessible for small businesses and trial orders
  • Slightly more handling, as cargo is grouped and separated at each end

Which Should You Choose

As a rule of thumb, choose LCL for small loads and FCL once your cargo fills roughly half a container or more. If you are buying from several suppliers, a cargo consolidation service can combine those LCL shipments into one, lowering your cost further. You can also weigh this against air freight for urgent stock.
