Starting an import business in Bangladesh is less about one big decision and more about getting a sequence of smaller steps right, in the right order. Skipping ahead — ordering stock before your paperwork is sorted, for example — is where most new importers run into avoidable delays.
Legal and Registration Steps
Before you place your first order, you generally need a Trade License from your local City Corporation or Union Parishad, a Tax Identification Number (TIN), and an Import Registration Certificate (IRC) from the Chief Controller of Imports and Exports (CCI&E). VAT registration (BIN) is also required once your business crosses the applicable turnover threshold.
Choosing What to Import First
New importers do best starting with one product category they understand well, rather than spreading thin across many products. This makes it easier to judge fair pricing, realistic lead times, and quality expectations from suppliers.
Finding and Vetting a Supplier
- Shortlist a few suppliers and compare, rather than committing to the first one you find
- Ask for a sample before any bulk order
- Confirm production and shipping lead times in writing
- Check whether the price quoted is FOB, EXW, or another term — this changes what you still need to arrange

Shipping, Customs, and Delivery
Once your order is ready, you’ll need to decide between air and sea freight, arrange customs clearance at the port or airport, and pay the applicable duties and VAT. Costs here vary by product category and shipment size, so it’s worth getting a specific quote for your exact order rather than budgeting from a general estimate.
If you’d rather not manage each of these steps separately, our team handles sourcing through delivery as one service. Contact us for a free consultation on your first import.
