Southern China is the manufacturing heart of the country, and most goods bound for Bangladesh begin their journey in the Guangzhou and Shenzhen region. This guide explains how cargo moves from there to Chittagong port and what you need to prepare.
The Main Shipping Routes
Goods are gathered in Guangzhou or Shenzhen and loaded at nearby ports such as Shenzhen (Yantian and Shekou) or Guangzhou (Nansha). From there, container vessels carry them to Chittagong, Bangladesh’s main seaport, either directly or via a transhipment hub such as Singapore or Port Klang.
Typical Transit Times
Sea transit from South China to Chittagong usually takes a few weeks, depending on the route and whether the service is direct. You should also allow extra time for booking, loading, and customs clearance on arrival. For urgent goods, air freight to Dhaka is much faster but more expensive.
Documents You Will Need
Smooth clearance depends on accurate paperwork. At a minimum you will need a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and, where required, a certificate of origin and LC documents. Our guide to essential import documents explains each one.
Customs Clearance at Chittagong
Once your cargo arrives, it must be cleared through Bangladesh customs before delivery. A licensed C&F (clearing and forwarding) agent handles the assessment, duty payment and release so your goods are not held at the port.
