It is tempting to skip the sample stage to save time and money, especially when a supplier seems trustworthy. But ordering a sample before bulk production is the cheapest insurance an importer can buy — it catches problems while they are still easy and inexpensive to fix.
Why Samples Matter
A sample shows you the real product, not just photos. You can check the material, finish, size and function before committing to thousands of units. If the sample is wrong, you have lost a little; if a full order is wrong, you have lost a lot.
Types of Samples
- Stock sample — an existing product, to judge general quality
- Custom sample — made to your specification or design
- Pre-production sample — made before the full run begins
- Golden sample — the approved reference both sides keep
What to Check in a Sample
- Materials and build quality
- Dimensions, weight and colour
- Function and durability in real use
- Packaging and labelling
The Golden Sample Method
Once a sample is approved, keep it as the golden sample — the agreed standard your bulk order must match. It becomes the reference for any quality inspection before shipment, so there is no argument about what good looks like.
