
When you buy a mini cold storage, the quotation will name a refrigerant — R404A, R134a, R449A, R290 — and most buyers skip straight past it. That is a mistake in 2026. The refrigerant decides how efficient the system is, whether the gas will still be easy and cheap to buy in five years, whether a local technician can service it, and whether it complies with the phase-down Bangladesh has signed up to. Here is what the options mean for a small cold-room buyer.
Why refrigerant choice is now a live question
The older workhorse refrigerants for commercial refrigeration are hydrofluorocarbons — HFCs — and while they do not harm the ozone layer, they are potent greenhouse gases. The Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol commits countries, Bangladesh among them, to a scheduled phase-down of HFC consumption over the coming years. In practice that means the highest-impact gases get progressively restricted, quota-limited and more expensive, while lower-impact alternatives take over. A cold room bought today should last well over a decade, so it should be charged with a gas that has a future, not one on the way out.
The gases you will be offered
- R404A — the long-standing standard for commercial and low-temperature refrigeration. Very high global-warming potential, roughly four thousand times that of carbon dioxide. It works well but it is the prime target of the phase-down. Avoid it in a new system.
- R134a — medium-temperature HFC, moderate global-warming potential (around fourteen hundred). Still common in chillers and display cabinets, but also being pushed down over time.
- R449A and R448A — blended HFC/HFO refrigerants designed as direct replacements for R404A, with roughly a third of its global-warming potential. Mildly flammable class or non-flammable depending on blend, serviceable with familiar tools, and the pragmatic default for a new mini cold storage today.
- R290 (propane) — a natural refrigerant with a negligible global-warming potential and excellent energy efficiency. The catch is that it is highly flammable, so safety standards cap how much can be charged into a system; it suits small, self-contained or plug-in cold rooms and monoblock units rather than large split systems.
- R744 (carbon dioxide) — natural, essentially zero warming impact, used mainly in larger and industrial installations; runs at high pressure and needs specialised components and technicians.
What global-warming potential actually costs you
Global-warming potential is not just an environmental abstraction — it becomes an operating cost. As the phase-down tightens supply, high-potential gases like R404A get scarcer and dearer, so a leak or a re-gas after a repair costs more each year. Regulations increasingly require leak checks and proper recovery for high-potential charges. And if import quotas squeeze a particular gas, you can be left with a system that is expensive or difficult to recharge. A lower-potential refrigerant is insurance against all of that.
Efficiency and running cost
Refrigerant choice also moves the electricity bill, which in Bangladesh is the dominant lifetime cost of a cold room. Propane systems are typically among the most efficient; the HFO blends are broadly comparable to what they replace; older high-potential blends are not the efficiency leaders. Questions to put to the supplier before you sign
- Which refrigerant is the system charged with, and what is its global-warming potential?
- Is that gas freely importable into Bangladesh now, and expected to stay available through the phase-down?
- Can a technician in my area buy the gas locally and service this system, and are they trained for flammable refrigerants if it is R290?
- If it is a flammable refrigerant, is the room and plant layout compliant with the charge-size and ventilation rules?
- What is the expected leak rate and what does a full recharge cost today?
The practical recommendation
For a typical mini cold storage in Bangladesh in 2026: do not accept R404A in a new system. For a standard split system, specify R449A or R448A. For a small monoblock or plug-in room where the charge stays within safety limits, R290 is an excellent choice if your installer is competent with it. Confirm local gas availability and service skills before you commit, because the best refrigerant on paper is useless if nobody within reach can recharge it. Retrofitting an existing R404A system
If you already run an R404A cold room, you are not forced to replace it tomorrow, but plan for it. A retrofit to a lower-potential blend such as R449A or R448A is usually possible on existing hardware: recover the R404A properly, change the lubricant if the compressor maker requires it, replace filter driers and seals as needed, adjust the expansion device and controls, and recharge. Capacity and efficiency shift slightly, so it is a job for a competent technician following the compressor and refrigerant maker’s conversion notes, not a straight swap. The alternative — keep running R404A — means accepting that each leak and recharge gets more expensive as the phase-down tightens supply.
Flammable refrigerant safety in a Bangladeshi installation
R290 propane is an excellent refrigerant but it is an A3 — highly flammable. Safety standards limit the charge mass allowed in a system based on the size of the occupied space and the equipment type, which is why R290 lives in small monoblock and plug-in cold rooms rather than large split systems. If a supplier offers you an R290 system, confirm the charge is within the limit for your room size, that the plant space has the required ventilation and no ignition sources, that electrical components in the refrigerant circuit are the correct spark-free type, and that your service technician is trained and equipped for flammable refrigerants. A well-designed R290 monoblock is safe; an oversized or badly sited one is not.
Blends, glide and why you cannot always just top up
Most of the modern replacements are zeotropic blends — mixtures of gases that boil over a range of temperatures rather than at one point, a behaviour called temperature glide. Two practical consequences follow. First, a blended refrigerant should be charged as a liquid, because if it leaks or is charged as vapour the mixture composition shifts and performance drifts. Second, after a leak you often cannot simply add gas to top up; best practice is to recover what is left and recharge with a fresh, correctly proportioned fill. Factor that into service cost expectations, and keep the system’s refrigerant type and charge weight on a label at the unit so any technician knows what they are working with.
If a supplier offers you only R404A
Push back. Ask specifically for the system to be supplied and charged with R449A or R448A for a split system, or R290 for a small monoblock within the safe charge limit. A manufacturer selling into an export market should be able to do this as standard in 2026; an unwillingness to is a signal about how current the rest of their engineering is. If R404A is genuinely the only option for a particular unit, price in the rising cost of that gas over the equipment’s life and the likelihood of a retrofit within a few years, and weigh that against a different model or supplier.
