Consolidated Air Freight: How It Works and When to Use It

Not every shipment is large enough to justify booking air cargo space on its own. Consolidated air freight groups multiple smaller shipments from different importers into one booking, sharing the cost.

How Consolidation Works

A freight forwarder combines cargo from several shippers heading to the same destination into one master shipment, then splits it back out for individual customs clearance and delivery at the other end.

Why It's Cheaper

Airlines price in bulk, so a forwarder consolidating several smaller shipments can access better per-kg rates than any single small shipper booking alone, and pass some of that saving on.

Trade-offs to Know

• Consolidated shipments sometimes take slightly longer, since cargo waits for enough volume to fill a booking
• Customs clearance can take marginally longer as the master shipment is split back into individual consignments
• It’s generally not the right choice for genuinely time-critical single shipments, where a direct booking is faster
