Air Freight Packaging Requirements: What Airlines Actually Check

DE International express air shipping agent - door to door from China to Bangladesh and worldwide

Air freight cargo goes through a more immediate acceptance check than sea freight, since it’s loaded directly onto an aircraft. Packaging that would pass for a container shipment doesn’t always pass for air.

General Requirements

  • Cartons must be sturdy enough to withstand handling and stacking without crushing
  • Weight and dimensions must be accurately declared — airlines re-weigh and re-measure at acceptance
  • Fragile items need appropriate cushioning, clearly marked on the outer carton
  • Restricted or dangerous goods (batteries, aerosols, liquids) need specific compliant packaging and documentation

Why Airlines Are Stricter Here

Unlike a shipping container that absorbs some handling shock, air cargo is loaded and unloaded multiple times in a shorter window, often alongside other cargo of different shapes and weights. Airlines reject or hold shipments that don’t meet their handling standards, rather than accepting the risk.

Getting It Right Before Pickup

The cheapest way to avoid a rejected or delayed shipment is confirming packaging standards with your supplier before the goods are packed, not after they arrive at the forwarder’s warehouse ready for airline handover.

Ask us to review your packaging plan before your next air shipment, especially if you’re shipping batteries, liquids, or fragile goods.
