Mini Cold Storage for Seed Storage: Keeping Planting Seed Viable Between Seasons

Seed is a living crop input, and it loses viability every week it is held in the wrong conditions. For a seed dealer, a farm cooperative, or an exporter holding planting stock between seasons, a small cold room does a specific job: it slows the metabolism of the seed so that germination stays high when the next sowing window opens. This is a different design problem from storing potatoes or fish, and getting the humidity target wrong does more damage than getting the temperature slightly wrong.

What kills seed in storage

Two factors drive seed deterioration: moisture content and temperature. Warm, humid air raises the seed’s internal moisture, which speeds respiration, feeds storage fungi, and lets insects breed. Bangladesh’s ambient conditions for much of the year push seed in exactly the wrong direction. There is a widely used rule of thumb among seed technologists that the sum of storage temperature in degrees Fahrenheit and relative humidity as a percentage should stay below 100 for safe storage — and that dry storage matters even more than cold storage. The practical implication for a cold room is that you cannot just chill humid air; you have to control humidity as a first-class variable, or you will condense moisture onto cold seed and make the problem worse.

Dry the seed before it goes in

A cold room is not a dryer. Seed must be brought down to a safe moisture content before storage, using the sun or a batch dryer, and then sealed against re-absorbing moisture. Orthodox seeds — rice, wheat, maize, most vegetables, pulses, jute — tolerate and benefit from low moisture and low temperature. Recalcitrant seeds — jackfruit, some large tropical tree seeds — are damaged by drying and by chilling, and generally cannot be held this way at all. Know which category your crop falls into before you invest, because a cold room that is perfect for vegetable seed will kill a batch of recalcitrant tree seed.

Temperature and humidity targets

Genebanks run very cold and very dry for decades-long storage, which is more than a commercial dealer needs. For holding orthodox seed from one season to the next, a cool, dry room with tightly controlled humidity is usually enough, and the colder and drier you go the longer the safe holding period and the higher the carry-over germination. Packaging decides whether humidity control even works

If you store dried seed in sealed, moisture-proof containers — laminated foil bags, sealed drums, hermetic liners inside sacks — the seed keeps its low moisture content regardless of room humidity, and the cold room only has to hold temperature. If you store in woven polypropylene or jute sacks that breathe, the seed will equilibrate with room air, so the room’s dehumidification has to be sized to hold a low relative humidity continuously. Hermetic packaging is usually the cheaper path to a reliable result because it shrinks the job the mechanical system has to do.

Room design points specific to seed

  • A dehumidifier or a desiccant system sized for the room, not just a refrigeration coil — chilling alone can raise relative humidity.
  • Insulated panels and a well-sealed vapour barrier so outside humidity does not leak in and condense.
  • Racking that keeps sacks off the floor and away from walls for air circulation and to prevent moisture pickup.
  • A door discipline and an airlock or strip curtain, because every door opening in Bangladesh’s monsoon dumps humid air into the room.
  • A data logger for temperature and humidity so you can prove storage conditions to a buyer or a certification body.
  • Backup power planning — seed tolerates a short outage better than ice cream, but repeated warm-up and cool-down cycles cause condensation.

A germination test schedule

Cold storage slows decline; it does not stop it. Run a standard germination test on a drawn sample when seed goes into store, and repeat it before each dispatch or before the sowing season. This gives you a real germination percentage to print on the bag and to stand behind, and it tells you if a particular lot is declining faster than expected so you can sell it first. How this compares to a general cold room

A vegetable cold room is built to hold produce near its freezing point at high humidity to stop wilting. A seed room is almost the opposite on humidity: you want the air dry. If you already run a potato or vegetable cold store, do not simply put seed in a corner of it — the high humidity that keeps potatoes firm will re-wet your seed. Insect control in store without fumigating every month

Cold slows insect development, and below a certain temperature stored-product pests such as weevils and grain borers stop breeding altogether — which is one of the quiet benefits of a chilled seed room over an ambient godown. Combined with hermetic packaging, which starves any insects present of oxygen, a cold dry room can hold seed through a season with little or no repeat chemical treatment. Start clean: only put down seed that has been dried and, where appropriate, treated at intake, and keep new intake separate from older stock until you are sure it is not carrying infestation. Inspect drawn samples for live insects and frass at each germination test.

Sizing and running-cost expectations

Seed is dense and stacks compactly, so the room itself is usually small relative to a produce cold store for the same business. Running cost is driven mainly by how hard the dehumidification has to work, which is why hermetic packaging — letting the room hold temperature only — is the cheaper long-run choice. If you sell certified or export planting seed, the storage record is part of the product. Keep a continuous log of room temperature and relative humidity from a data logger, the intake moisture content and date for each lot, the germination test results over time, and any treatment applied. A buyer’s quality check, and the paperwork behind a phytosanitary certificate for exported seed, is far smoother when you can hand over a clean storage history rather than a verbal assurance.
