Bangladesh grows pineapple mainly in the hill districts of Khagrachari, Rangamati and parts of Sylhet, and almost all of it currently moves through domestic markets rather than export channels. That is starting to change as buyers in the Middle East and neighbouring markets show interest in South Asian pineapple, but the fruit’s post-harvest behaviour is unforgiving of the same cold chain gaps that Bangladesh’s more established fruit exports (mango, jackfruit) can sometimes tolerate. Pineapple does not ripen further in any meaningful way once picked — unlike mango, which continues to ripen and sweeten after harvest — which changes the entire logic of when to pick, how fast to cool, and how much shelf life is actually available for the journey to a buyer.
Pineapple Does Not Ripen After Harvest, So Harvest Timing Is Everything
Because pineapple’s starch-to-sugar conversion largely stops at harvest, a fruit picked too early stays under-sweet and acidic no matter how it is subsequently handled, while a fruit picked too ripe for a long journey has almost no buffer left before it starts breaking down. This is a fundamentally different harvest decision than for climacteric fruits like mango or banana, where picking slightly under-ripe and letting the fruit finish ripening in transit is a standard, deliberate strategy. Exporters need to harvest pineapple at a maturity stage matched specifically to the transit time to that particular buyer — a shipment with a week of transit ahead needs a less mature fruit at harvest than one going a short distance to a regional market, and getting this matching wrong cannot be corrected later with better cold chain.
Chilling Injury Sets a Real Floor on Storage Temperature
Pineapple is a tropical fruit and is genuinely sensitive to chilling injury below about 7–8°C, which shows up as internal browning of the flesh, dull skin colour, and a failure to develop full flavour even though the fruit may look externally intact. This puts a firm floor under how cold a pineapple cold chain can run, in contrast to hardier temperate produce, and exporters who assume “colder is always safer” risk delivering fruit with internal browning that only becomes visible once a buyer cuts it open, well after the shipment has been accepted and paid for. The workable storage window for pineapple generally sits in the 7–10°C range depending on variety and how far along the ripening process the fruit already was at harvest.
Crown Removal and Handling Damage Are a Bigger Risk Than for Most Fruit
Pineapple’s crown (the leafy top) and its tough external rind make it look more robust in handling than it actually is at the base and the eyes of the fruit, where bruising and impact damage during harvest, transport to a pack house, and loading can create entry points for rot organisms that spread inward from the surface. Fruit is generally harvested with the crown left attached for both handling and market presentation, but rough handling of the crown itself can twist and damage the fruit at the point where crown meets body, an injury that is not always visible until the fruit has been in storage for several days and the internal damage has had time to show. Careful, gloved handling that avoids gripping fruit by the crown alone, and padding between layers in transport crates, meaningfully reduces this risk compared with loose stacking.
Ethylene Sensitivity Runs the Opposite Direction From Most Produce
Many fruits are ethylene producers that need to be kept away from ethylene-sensitive vegetables during storage, but pineapple is a low ethylene producer that is nonetheless somewhat sensitive to ethylene from other sources, which can accelerate skin yellowing without actually improving internal ripeness or flavour — essentially making the fruit look more ripe than it is. Storing pineapple in the same cold room as high-ethylene produce like ripening bananas or mangoes, a practice this site has generally not recommended for other reasons in earlier guides, is a specific problem here because it can mislead a buyer’s visual inspection about the fruit’s actual eating quality, creating a mismatch between appearance and taste that damages trust in future orders.
Packaging and Ventilation for the Journey
Pineapple continues to respire significantly after harvest, generating heat and moisture inside a sealed package, so ventilated crates or cartons with adequate airflow between fruit matter more here than for lower-respiration produce. Fruit packed too tightly, or in packaging with insufficient ventilation holes, traps this respiration heat and moisture inside the package even when the surrounding cold room is at the correct temperature, creating localised warm, humid pockets around individual fruit that accelerate exactly the decay the cold chain is meant to prevent. This is a common and avoidable failure point distinct from the cold room’s own performance — the room can be running perfectly and the fruit can still suffer if the packaging itself is trapping heat.
What Realistic Market Entry Looks Like
Given the current scale of Bangladesh’s pineapple sector, the more realistic near-term opportunity is improving cold chain for domestic distribution from the hill districts to Dhaka and other urban markets, extending the fruit’s sellable window and reducing the post-harvest losses that are common in Bangladesh’s current largely ambient-temperature pineapple supply chain. Formal export requires meeting a specific buyer’s phytosanitary and quality requirements, consistent volume commitments, and infrastructure most current growers do not yet have, and it is worth building domestic cold chain competence and volume first rather than attempting to set up export infrastructure ahead of having a proven, reliable supply base to draw on.

Road transport from the hill districts to Dhaka or a port involves hours on roads with variable surface quality, and constant low-level vibration has a cumulative bruising effect on pineapple similar to, though slower than, a single hard impact — fruit that looks undamaged after loading can arrive with soft, bruised patches near the base after several hours of vibration against neighbouring fruit or the sides of a crate. Interlayer padding and crates sized so fruit is held snugly without excessive movement room reduce this cumulative vibration damage more effectively than simply cushioning the top and bottom of a stack, since it is the lateral movement during transport, not just vertical compression, that causes much of this bruising.
