Why Temperature Mapping Matters More Than the Spec Sheet
Because dragon fruit’s safe temperature band sits closer to ambient room conditions than most cold-stored produce, a cold room with uneven temperature distribution — warmer near the door, colder near the evaporator, a common pattern in poorly designed layouts — is more likely to push at least part of a dragon fruit batch below the chilling threshold even while the average reading on the thermostat looks correct. The chilling-injury threshold difference described above is the single most important thing for that group to unlearn from experience gained on other fruit, since applying a cold room set-point tuned for mango or leafy vegetables to a new dragon fruit line is the most likely single cause of unexplained quality complaints in a trader’s first season handling the crop.
Transport Vehicle Selection for the Domestic Leg
For dragon fruit moving from northern growing districts into Dhaka and other urban markets, the choice between an insulated non-refrigerated vehicle and a fully active reefer truck depends heavily on transit duration and ambient temperature at the time of travel, since the fruit’s relatively wide safe temperature band (roughly 8–10°C up to normal ambient) means a well-insulated vehicle without active refrigeration can often hold acceptable conditions for a shorter daytime journey, while a longer haul or a hot-season transport genuinely needs active cooling to stay reliably above the chilling threshold and below the point where the fruit softens too quickly. Matching vehicle choice to route and season, rather than defaulting to whichever vehicle is available, avoids paying for reefer capacity the fruit does not actually need on a short cool-season run, or under-protecting it on a longer hot-season one.
