Courier (DHL/FedEx) vs Air Freight: Which Should You Use?

It’s easy to lump express couriers like DHL and FedEx together with general air freight since both fly cargo from China to Bangladesh. In practice, they’re structured quite differently and each suits a different kind of shipment.

How Courier Services Are Different

Courier services bundle pickup, flight, customs clearance, and door delivery into one simple, trackable service with a single waybill number. This makes them very convenient for small parcels, but their per-kilogram rates rise quickly as shipment size grows.

How General Air Freight Is Different

Air freight (sometimes called air cargo) is typically better priced for larger shipments — several boxes or a pallet — but requires more coordination, since clearance and delivery aren’t always bundled the same way a courier bundles them, unless arranged as part of a door-to-door service.

A Rule of Thumb

• A few kilograms or a small parcel: courier is usually simpler and fast enough
• Several boxes or more: air freight (ideally bundled as door-to-door) usually works out cheaper per kilogram
• Extremely time-critical, no matter the size: courier’s speed and simplicity can still be worth the premium
