Price negotiation with a Chinese supplier works differently than a one-off haggle at a market stall — especially if you want to keep working with the same factory for repeat orders.
Do Your Homework First
Get quotes from two or three suppliers for the same specification before negotiating with any of them. Knowing the realistic price range for your product is far more useful than guessing at a number to counter with.
What Actually Moves Price
- Order quantity — larger, confirmed volumes typically unlock better per-unit pricing
- Payment terms — a larger upfront deposit can sometimes lower price
- Packaging simplicity — custom packaging adds cost that’s negotiable separately from the product itself
- Repeat order commitment — suppliers often price differently for a buyer signaling an ongoing relationship
What to Avoid
Pushing a supplier below a price they can sustainably deliver at often shows up later as a quality shortcut — cheaper materials, skipped QC steps, or missed deadlines. A fair, workable price is usually better long-term than the absolute lowest number you can extract.
